Description of
the right

There are many different positions for giving birth. You have the right to be informed about the advantages and disadvantages of each.

Your healthcare professional may suggest a certain position. They must explain the reasons for their preference, along with other possible choices. You have the right to accept or refuse the suggested position.

If you understand the risks, you can give birth in the position of your choice, even if you have an epidural which can reduce the strength in your legs.

You can change your mind at any time.

It is recommended to discuss birthing positions during your pregnancy appointments.

If your healthcare professional feels that they are not competent to assist you, they may refuse to do so and quickly refer you to a colleague or another healthcare setting.

If a healthcare professional does not feel competent with the position you have chosen and none of their colleagues are available, they must inform you of the risks and still assist you to the best of their ability.

Examples of situations

You may want to give birth

  • on your side, squatting, on all fours, on your knees or on your back.
