Nutrition during childbirth
Description of
the right
The healthcare team may recommend that you avoid eating during a vaginal delivery. This recommendation is usually intended to avoid the possibility of nausea or vomiting during labour or to reduce risks in case of complications.
If you accept the risks, you can eat and drink as much as you want and need. Establishment’s rules cannot oppose this right.
Before eating, it’s important to discuss it with the care team so that you can make an informed decision.
Eating and drinking during labour may present a greater risk if you suffer from certain pregnancy complications (e.g., severe preeclampsia). You have the right to receive all necessary information in order to fully understand these risks and make an informed decision.
