Description of
the right

In Quebec, it is possible to give birth in a hospital, in a birth centre or at home. If there are several birth centres or hospitals in your area, you can choose the one you prefer.

It may be possible for you to be referred to a more specialized facility if your state of health requires it.

Depending on your wishes, you have the right to be informed about the procedures, regulations and services offered in each establishment in order to make an informed decision. Some places can be visited in person before giving birth while others offer a virtual tour.

Doctors only attend deliveries in hospitals. Midwives can attend deliveries in all three locations. However, birth centres may have limited places and access to them is not currently guaranteed by law.
