Description of
the right

A pregnancy can be monitored by a doctor, a specialized practitioner nurse in primary care or a midwife. You have the right to choose who will follow your pregnancy without judgment.

You have the right to be informed, at the start of the pregnancy, about the various options available in your region and how to access them. The Quebec Government’s Ma Grossesse platform can help you find the services you need.

You have the right to change your choice of pregnancy care at any time without suffering consequences from the healthcare team. You can also decide to change healthcare establishments.

The healthcare establishment must do its best to accommodate your request. In the event of an emergency or depending on the availability of professionals or the rules of the establishment, your request may be impossible to carry out.

Access to a midwife may be limited and is not currently guaranteed by law.

Some high-risk pregnancies require follow-up with a doctor.

Several examples of situations

  • You can accept or refuse to be examined by students.
  • When transferring from a birth center to a hospital because of a complication, we can’t comment on your choice of midwife.
