Description of
the right

In Quebec, it is a right to choose to place a baby up for adoption. Your region’s Integrated Health and Social Services Centre (CISSS) or Integrated University Health and Social Services Centre (CIUSSS) can provide information and support to help you with this decision. The final decision is made only after birth.

In general, you cannot choose your child’s adoptive parents. However, if a family member wants to adopt the child and you agree, special consent can be given to allow their adoption.

In all cases, to place a child up for adoption, you must contact your region’s CISSS or CIUSSS.

The mother have 30 days to confirm the adoption or change their mind and recover the child. If another parent is listed on the Declaration of Birth, the consent of that parent is also required.
